How To Make Thermite:

Now, I am not going to tell you guys what thermite is, or what you can do with it. Just do a Google search and you'll find tons of sites telling you a bunch of uses for it. I will however, tell you how to make the stuff.

Obtaining the Aluminum
1) Go to a machine shop. They will usually give you aluminum powder for sweeping the floor or something.
2) Break open an Etch-A-Sketch, the stuff inside is pure aluminum powder.
3) Go to a paint store, they usually have powdered aluminum that people use to mix into paints to give it pigment.
4) Get a grinder, and something made of aluminum. Good ideas are soda cans, bike frames, and lacrosse sticks. Start grinding the aluminum and collect the sparks in a container.
5) Search eBay, they sell it for pretty cheap.

Obtaining the Iron Oxide (Rust)
1) Take some steel wool then put it in a jar and then cover it wool with water. Use a magnet to make sure the steel wool doesnt float during the reaction process. Next, put in 5 tablespoons of regular bleach into the water and 5 tablespoons of regular vinager. Wait a day or so and then filter the brown paste with a coffee filter. Leave it out to dry overnight.
2)
Go to a paint store, they usually have powdered iron oxide that people use to mix into paints to give it pigment.
3) Connect wires to a direct current (9-volt battery), strip both ends and put them into a saltwater solution. Let them sit for five minutes. One of them will start bubbling more than the other. This is the POSITIVE(+) wire. Put a nail tied to the positive wire into the jar. Now put the negative wire in the other end. Now let it sit overnight and in the morning scrape the rust off of the nail & repeat until you have a bunch of rust on the bottom of the glass. Let it dry out, and crush it into a powder.
4) Search eBay, they sell it for pretty cheap.

Mixing the Stuff
Thermite is 8 grams of iron oxide to 3 grams of aluminum. The formula is by weight but because aluminum is very light, it will appear to be approximately a 50-50 mix. Put them together in a container and mix them until it is an even mixture. If you want, mix four parts thermite with one part clay or Play-Doh and knead thoroughly for moldable thermite.

Igniting
Thermite needs a lot of heat to light, that means magnesium. Find some magnesium ribbon, or a sparkler that contains magnesium and put it into a pile of thermite. Light it with a torch, and run!

You people are all fucking idiots, please do the rest of the world a favor and unplug your computer - never turn it on again, and stop going outside to leave the trailer park.

However, if you want to make thermite - well by all means do so at your own risk, if you get fucked up in the process, don't get all pissy about it as that's what us civilized folk call "natural selection".

Assholes...

the VERY best way to get iron oxide, and lots of it, for free.

go to your school shop, on the bench grinder, they are usually required to have the iron flakes ran into a trash can.

this is iron powder, all it needs is a little electrolysis, put it into a ice cream bucket of salt water with 2 nails in it,

the bubbling one on the bottom and the the other one in the side above the iron level and below the water level.

to power it find an old wall wart, it would be best to use a 12 volt one. and idk/idc if it puts out bad chemicles just put it outside

i went through like 3 nails before i realized that i didnt change colors when it was done, it changes colors when you take it out of the water and let it dry, it also heats up too hot to touch, because its the same reaction that happens in a hand warmer, so put in in a metal pot with a hot pad below and stir to allow it to dry.

do not breath in the dust, its probally not good for you

Thermite costs about 10 bucks per 5 pounds... Why bother? just go buy the damn stuff.

the best and safest way I've found to light the thermite is to make a small well in the thermite powder once you've placed it in the desired location then pour in about half teaspoon of powdered potassium permanganate(i bought this at my chemist for about $10 for 50 grams - note hen asking for it say your using it as a disinfectant or anything similar) and then pour on a sufficient amount of some liquid glycerine enough to just cover the potassium, then move. (i also bought this at my chemist but is available at many supermarkets!)
The time of ignition will differ depending on the amount you use but you usually have about 15-20 seconds before the glycerine and potassium will ignite!

Stay SAFE!

QUESTION: you said four parts thermite to one part play doh (or clay) but i dont understand how to compare play-doh and a powder mix in 'parts'... are we going back to weight ratio in grams?

Anonymous said...

Matches work well to light it if you light enough of them, just be sure to rig up someway to light them from a distance. Use a matchbook and some scotch tape and some string to rig something like this:

striker
--------------- string
O============------------
---------------
===============00
===============00
rest of matches

tape the whole thing into a tube and pull the string from a safe distance. Or light a fuse, available at alot of firework supply shops. I hope i've given a decent explaination of how to do this

Not bad, but a few potentially fatal errors. One, vinegar+bleach= chlorine gas. Not a huge prob, but it is if some idiot does it indoors. It's easier to burn steel wool (0000 grade is best) in a ceramic pot. The powder it produces is Fe3O4, "black" iron oxide. Knead the result of the fire in your hands, and the fine powder and small nodes are what you want. The rest that still looks like steel wool but is discolored is 2FeO, which is useless, just throw it away. You can make the burning more efficient by allowing it to burn slowly and with greater heat, that will produce a higher Fe3O4 to 2FeO ratio. Ball mill or grind the Fe3O4 powder/fine strands to produce a fine grain, and mix w/ aluminum in the ratio of about 1.5 to 1. This is a different kind of thermite, but produces the same reaction+heat. The only noticeable difference is that it is slightly denser.
This method is WAY faster than electrolysis or the Bleach+vinegar thing.
Also, you can mix 1/3 barium nitrate (aka toy rocket fuel) with the mixture to make thermate, which is what the military uses in thermite grenades. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, TRY AT OWN RISK.

Anonymous said...

Hey hey you guys did you know that if you take a match to steel wool it will burn and form rust.lol. pretty complicated stuff.

For the record, grinding aluminum on a bench grinder is extremely dangerous. The aluminum can melt into the wheel, expand due to the increasing heat, and cause the wheel to shatter.

This sounds so much like the old works toilet cleanser with foil in a plastic bottle reaction I used to make as a kid in grade school. Never quite felt as Impressive as I could have hoped, but at least I never got myself dead.

I was more interested in the idea of what chemicals might be used to heat Granite to the point of maliability I'm still drawn to the Idea that earlier societies may have possessed much more practical knowledge of their surrounds than we have today just can't quite buy the alien thing though panspermia that may be promising however of course I'm kind of anti-gian and belive micro-organisms will probrably win in the end.

Since Thermite has been stated to produce it's own oxygen in the mix is what would serve as a good containment vessel or coat to prevent possible spatter and possibly generate a more finely tuned focus for the heat?

Anonymous said...

Does Thermite have a long burn duration by comparison to other incendiary and could it be used to reduce friction between surfaces when ignited, if so how practice is this application given its massive heat generation is the reaction violent enough to keep from being smothered for example or will it burn it self completely out given most any condition? If so it sounds to have tremendous work potential. How curious, how would one render the reaction inert?

Ok thermite is used to disable and destroy vehicles, crypto-gear and radios you can use it to burn through case hardened or rolled steel safes. Aluminum powder is used in rocket motors and is very explosive on its own. Now add magnesium powder to the mix this will boost the burn at around 1200 degrees. I wont tell how to set it off. If you want to know more join the military and go to EOD school.

Rust is Fe2-O3. That's two irons per three oxygens. It makes really low grade thermite, so if you have to use rust, make a whole lot of thermite or you're going to be disappointed.

The best thermite is made with the true iron oxide, Fe-O, which is one iron per oxygen. This is not a form of rust that is found in nature, you can't get it by scraping old rusty brake rotors. It burns DRAMATICALLY better and leaves a very high quality metal slug if you cast it into a high-temperature ceramic mold. This is how seamless railroad is made, and you might be able to get some really awesome thermite from a friendly railroad worker, but it's unlikely since the stuff is expensive and therefore tightly controlled.

Another oxide of iron is magnetite or lodestone (Fe3-O4) which is supposed to be pretty good for thermite (but I haven't tried it). The proportions of iron to oxygen are closer to optimal so I expect it would work much better than rust.

Please remember that there is strong suspicion that the Anarchist's Cookbook was written by the CIA to poison or kill hippies and other anarchists. Many recipes in the book are fake. Some of the recipes are highly likely to be lethal.

However, this particular recipe looks plausible. Thermite can be made with rust and aluminum. The proprotions might need tweaking.

If you are using a sparkler as igniter, have the sparkler horizontal and time it first to see how long you have to run.

However, Myth Busters uses 4 books of matches with the heads all lined up and (I believe) fireworks cord as ignitor.

thermite doesnt actually melt through everything. the stuff is pretty killer, but its not effective on wood. you will just end up with a blackened exterior wherever the thermite contacts the wood. ive seen the same reaction on various lumber.

also, thermite will NOT melt ice. one might think this is idiotic considering ice melts above 32F. if you dont believe me, get some thermite, a big chuck of ice, stand two feet away, and ignite. you'll see what happens.>:)

The amount of dumbmongering going on in the comments leave me in awe. Especially regarding chlorine gas supposedly created by the electrolysis of NaCl.

In order to electrolyze NaCl, you would have to melt salt and pass electricity through it. That would happen to make chlorine gas.

But that's not what's happening here, we're passing electricity through water. That produces H2 and O2, nothing else, especially not FUCKING CHLORINE GAS.

When you put salt into water, it breaks down (dissociates) into its constituent ions, namely Na+ and Cl-. OH NOES, ITZ THA DREDDED CL! CL IS A GAS THAT IZ POISONUZ AND WILL KILLZ YU!

Um... No. Cl- is not a gas, its an ion. Cl2 is poisonous gas, but Cl2 =/= Cl-. Na+ will accumulate at one electrode and the Cl- will accumulate at the other electrode. The chlorine IONS will not turn into chlorine ATOMS.

That would require two Cl- ions to lose a valence electron each, to form diatomic chlorine. If that did occur, as some of you have proposed, then by the same logic the whole thing should explode.

Why would it explode? because if Cl- can spontaneously transmute into Cl2, then Na+ should spontaneously transmute into Na.

Na + H2O = H2 + NaOH + Energy. H2 + Energy = Assplosion.

So if it did produce chlorine, it wouldn't matter, 'cuz you'd be in the hospital nursing the caustic burns created by an explosion spewing lye all over you.

There are some on here who are knowledgeable and other who are curious and some who are total morons.

point 1. combining any acid with bleach liberates chlorine gas which is poisonous and destroys lung tissue at the minimum.

point 2. H2O+NaCl+electricity also produces chlorine gas. This is something of a problem in submarines that use batteries as in WW2 when many submariners died as a result. The same process is used in salt water chlorinators for home swimming pools.

point 3. thermite is probably not illegal to make but using it is dangerous if used incorrectly.

point 4. thermite will burn under water and will draw oxygen from the water liberating hydrogen gas which can explode.

point 5. trying to extinguish a quantity of thermite with water is dangerous it is possible that the steam produced could aerosolise the thermite leading to an explosion and the production of a large quantity of light, sound and injuries it is best to leave it to burn out.

point 5. the light output is very bright (burning metal) and most of it is in the UV spectrum which can and often does damage eyes perminently.

point 6. dont f**k with things you dont understand, which appears to be most of you.

briantllb said...

Dan, the electrolysis of molten Nacl produces sodium metal as well as chlorine, the electrolysis of salt water does indeed produce Chlorine it also produces sodium metal but but the metal oxidises instantly which is why the liquid turns yellow. I am amazed that most of you are still alive.

And here's another little tip,

The Anarchists Cookbook contains a lot of inaccurate and potentially dangerous information for example, it does not mention the FACT that freshly ground charcoal as used in black powder can spontaneously ignite when mixed with KnO3 and Sulphur (sulfer for illiterate americans) If you want a product with similar results without the risk 65% Kno3 and 35% Ascorbic acid will do the same job as black powder without the dangers during manufacture. It is however just as illegal to make as black powder. Ascorbic acid is vitamin C and no you cant just grind up vitamin c tabs from the drug store. But you might be able to get the pure stuff from a bakery as it is used as an additave in bread, or get it on ebay.

some good use of electrolysis, but completely fake. Sodium moves to the cathode (negative pole) while chlorine gas move to the anode (positive node). The chlorine then becomes a gas from forming diatomic molecule and then you breathe it in and die. BUT you can collect it and poison someone sleeping if you want.

Look, the easiest way to get rust is build a tower 70ft high out of scrap lumber and put a 55gal steel oil drum at the bottom. Fill the drum with Brillo pads, the kind with soap and place a 12 volt car batter upside down on top of the Brillo pads. Then fill the barrel up with Crisco and vinegar (the vinegar will melt the Crisco to a liquid). Then pour 5 gallons of reagent grade acetone and 2 lbs of butter (salted) on top and stir carefully.

Climb up to the top of the tower with 70 lbs of steel ball bearings and drop them ALL AT ONE TIME into the barrel below.

Drain with a coffee filter.

An easy way to light thermite is to get a bunch (7) of bananas and dry them out in the oven. Then take the dried bananas and crush in a mortar and pistol (don't forget to take off the safety).
Place the powder in a mason jar and cover with bone meal and top with a jigger of extra virgin olive oil.
Pour a cup of unleaded gasoline into the jar and shake (the bone meal unbinds the alcohol from the gasoline) and return it to the blender.
This step is very important: Count to 25 then filter the mixture into slowly boiling water.

Take the water off the stove and let it cool. Then, using an iron skillet that's been properly seasoned, reduce the liquid to a putty.

This putty will burn at 3000 degrees F and you can light it with a match or with the sun.

If you want CL2 you need to electrolyse molten NaCl. will give pure(ish) Na (big fun) and liberate Cl gas. do it in a well ventelated area and don't stick your face in it and you'll be fine as the RXN is not fast enough to produce large ammounts of gas quickly.

:) said...

""DO NOT DO THIS. THIS IS WHAT RETARDS DO. SALT + ELECTICITY IN WATER = CHLORINE GAS. CHLORINE GAS is POISON. DO NOT do this at all."

umm not really, the salt is there to just electrolyze the water and make it so that electrons can travel through the water easier. the only gas you're giving off is hydrogen. if you want to make Cl gas with salt, just get some salt, get it VERY hot and you will have CL gas in the air (dangerous) and molten Na in your container (still dangerous)."

What they are asking you to do here is Electrolysis. This breaks down the molecules in the water. Those molecules are H20 (Water) and NaCl (Sodium Chloride/'Standard' Salt).

The Anode (Positive Wire) breaks down the water molecules when electricity is run through it to give off Hydrogen and Oxygen.

The Cathode (Negative Wire) breaks down the salt molecules to give off Sodium and Chlorine. This Sodium reacts with the Hydrogen given off by the Anode to form Sodium Hydroxide.

When the nail is added to the positive wire the Oxygen being given off rapidly oxides the surface of the Iron Nail with the assistance of the Chlorine (an oxidising agent).

Now on to why it is dangerous.

Chlorine (given off by the Cathode) is HIGHLY toxic. It aggravates the Human Respiratory system and can induce coughing and vomiting. If there is a higher concentration of Chlorine, it can also be fatal. The reason Chlorine is so toxic is because of the fact that it is an heavy oxidising agent. This causes it to react (at higher concentrations) with water and cells to form Hydrochloric Acid and Hydrochlorous Acid.

Another reason why this process is very dangerous is that because one of the large industrial uses of Brine Electrolysis (what is happening here) is to create Sodium Hydroxide. Sodium Hydroxide is a highly dangerous Alkali and will break down Proteins (what humans are composed of) fairly rapidly. It will also react with fats in the human body in a reaction called saponification to form soap. Therefore, if this process is done for extended periods of time; what was Brine (salt water) will become Sodium Hydroxide and begin to break down your fingers/hand when you go to retrieve the nail to harvest the rust.

Hi, I'm a PE and i've used electrolysis of brine on a commercial scale to produce sodium hypochlorite for drinking water disinfection. A very small of chlorine is liberated. About the smell of a chlorinated swimming pool.

If running a current through saltwater released chlorine gas, than the sodium in the NaCl would visibly react with the water, and form sodium oxide. The only gas production in the experiment would be hydrogen.

is it possible to make a slower burning thermite mix.... its kinda hard to get a good distance away before this mix goes "boom"??

Anonymous said...

I would just like to point some things out so that as few people as possible kill themselves first of all thermite can and will burn through damn near every thing so be carefull where you burn it second the easy way to light it is to take a hand sparkler that you can buy cheaply anywhere and stick is upside down in your mixture and light the middle or opposite end to give you time to run and finally do not burn your thermite any where near water or ice because it will explode not burn like normal. So I hope this keeps you alive and if not good luck winning the Darwin award.

Anonymous said...

this is wrong, the only thing you will get is hydrogen and oxygen, no chlorine gas. I have a degree in chemistry and did much of my work in electrochemistry.

Anonymous said...

Let's put the chlorine issue to rest so we can actually talk about this post's topic. Here goes.
Whip out your ph strips.
Make a 10% (about) solution of sodium chloride in water.
Measure the ph of this solution ( you should get a neutral 7). Now pour it into your electrolysis rig.
Start it and keep it on until about 90% of the original solution is left. Take out your ph strips again. You should get something more than 7 when you test the solution. This will vary a little depending on how much salt you started with and what current you worked with.
More than 7 indicates the presence of a base.
And this base happens to be sodium hydroxide.
So where does the chlorine go?
If there is enough oxygen to react with it in the same closed system, and everything is somewhat evenly mixed, hydrogen will not preferentially react with chlorine. So the chlorine is going to be pure, unreacted.
Chlorine (obviously (I hope!)) has a negative charge in this unreacted form, as does oxygen, so they will bubble into the surrounding atmosphere at the cathode.
I have tried so hard to avoid insulting anyone, but I can't help it. To the person who said "owned", no you are owned.
Learn some electrochemistry,
learn some stoichiometry,
take seventh grade chemistry,
and most importantly use common sense when handling this stuff you are trying to make.

Unknown said...

In fact all you get is hydrogen and oxygen. Table salt will not give you ClO2. That is just basic chemistry for the sixth grade in my country.

Unknown said...

You will not get ClO2 from table salt. It just speeds up the reaction which all it gives you is oxygen and hydrogen. This basic chemistry for grade 6 in my country. You are funny.

2(parts)NaOCl + 2NH3 --> 2NaONH3 + Cl2

Or, you could not mix ammonia and bleach. NaONH3 doesn't exist anyway. The proper sequence look like this.

NaOCl --> NaOH + HOCl
HOCl --> HCl + O

The HCl formed is used in the next reaction to give the gas that's actually toxic, chloramine.

NaOCl + 2HCl --> Cl2 + NaCl + H2O
2NH3 + Cl2 → 2NH2Cl

NH2Cl is the chloramine, and that's what's deadly. If there's enough ammonia, there's another set of reactions that will create hydrazine (N2H4) and this is explosive. So don't mix that crap.

I got a great laugh seeing how many people are saying Cl gas is released from the electrode trick.

It's called hydrogen gas, and it's not harmful at all, just as Nitrogen Gas, Aka N2o/Laughing Gas.. But when taken in large quantities it inhibits O2 intake and could cause a collapse. But, of course, that's only if you're inhaling it directly.

Please pay attention next time you're in science class, kiddos.

OMG - alot of absolutly useless ,unthought of advice from brainless morons.

Clearly this subject invokes a feeling in alot of folks that makes them want to try it... if the info is correct the may get there.

Iron oxide :
Place a sheet of roofing iron over an open can of peach's, (make sure the iron does not touch the can or the peachs will explode after a few hours ) approx. 3 days later remove your rusty iron and use a wirebrush to harvest the rust.
( only use peachs as they have the correct ammount of pectin in them )

Now for the aluminium:

This part is a little tricky and you may be at considerable risk of harm during the process -

Obtain one full grown cat and one roll of kitchen foil, wrap the cat in the foil making sure it cant get free from it.

Place foil package on an ovn tray and then into the oven at approx. 180 degrees C for no more than 4 hours

You should now have very small aluminium foil pieces on the tray.

To mix:

Place equal parts of both into a small pot and heat over a red hot element or flame untill the contents have joined together - imediatley pour out onto the bench and roll out thinly

This should clear up the many myths that have appeared on this page

EASY THERMITE LIGHTER
Hold your thermite in one hand and with a BIC lighter in the other keep striking the lighter so the sparks land on the thermite, also be ready to blow lightly on the thermite when it ignites to enhance the flames until it catches good, then set the powder down.

I firmly believe in and enjoy natural selection.

Anonymous said...

Well actually he is more correct than you know, the architects and designers of the world trade center built thermite charges into the frame from day 1 (because all buildings get old and need to be demolished eventually, even the twin towers). When the aircraft hit the towers the engineers knew that if they were to fall it would cause more damage than a controlled demolition so they blew the charges; thats why they came down the way they did, it was an official published report so I'm not I'm sure why people dont know about it...

Depending on who you ask, it will or will not give off chlorine gas. Distilled water will not, city water will. Taking a hot enough shower releases chlorine gas, the water heating up will release a small amount of it.

Anonymous said...

While you are at it, once all the chlorine is converted to gas, put the sodium in water and watch it explode.

Anonymous said...

chlorine is one of the chemicals released by electrolysis of sodium chloride in salt water. it is a very small amount at a time if the electrodes are small but it is still chlorine gas

Anonymous said...

Why bother making the ingredients when you can get them cheap off amazon? And thermite isn't an explosive its an incendiary. If you wanna blow a car up make a pipebomb, if you just wanna burn through the engine block use thermite.

Anonymous said...

No, actually I asked a chemist in highschool and you need electrolysis running on salt that is itself already a liquid (salt is liquid at something like 700 Celsius, look it up) water would evaporate at that temperature. Try running an electrolysis setup in side an oven set to self clean to make choline gas. Sodium would ignite probably :)

Mr. Experienced chemist, chlorine gas was referred to as mustard gas during WWI and therefore you are wrong
Also, to those who talk about the production of chlorine gas from the water and salt solution, it is not producing chlorine but rather hydrogen gas due to the conductivity of water being increased by the introduction of salt

You take a tank of seawater (saltwater), run two wires through the tank, pass a current through the wires, the current changes the atomic structure of the water, turning it into covalent (organic) chlorine (not the kind you put in a swimming pool). .... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chloralkali_process Its fundamentally the basis of all non-petroleum chemical manufacturing. Poly-cyclic Bi-phenols (or PCBs) are an example of toxic waste made from the Chor alkali process.

Forget chemistry classes. You lot need basic spelling and grammar before you can graduate to chem. If you came into my class with writing abilities as demonstrated here you'd be out on the street and back in grade school.

As a chem prof, I can say that while you will get chlorine gas the quantity by volume of NaCl is so minute that you actually need a gas chromatograph to detect it. It is not detectable by odour.

That's true. A simple 9v battery isn't strong enough to separate and vaporize the chlorine in saltwater. But, I would advise against trying to speed the process with multiple batts, as that would eventually have enough power to ignite the now oyxgen-fuel (hydrogen) rich environment.

Anonymous said...

But the rate that a bucket of water would turn to steam, and the concussive force it would produce, that would, indeed qualify as an explosion.

I use the rock tumbler idea fairly often, but with one difference. Iron shavings, aluminum shavings, water. both metals will oxidize, and the oxidized metals will scraping each other off. the tumbling will also make both materials into a nice, fine powder.

Wow, the level of ignorance is astounding. Do people do it on purpose.

By the way you wanna play with deadly gasses no need to be fancy, CO2 is as deadly as they come (dead is dead right)and is clourless AND odourles AND unmonitored. Or you can get creative you already have Phosgene. Hands up who wants to know how to make di-isopropyl methylphosphonate, guess what a little distillation of those two make??? Just keep the atropine sulphate and 2PAM handy.

There was some discussion about chlorine gas being produced in this reaction. It is true chlorine gas IS produced in this reaction.

Once again, CHLORINE GAS IS PRODUCED IN THIS REACTION. CHLORINE GAS IS POISONOUS.

It's very dangerous to be ignorant to the chemistry behind the process, and present the idea. Here is some evidence from the internet:

"In the case of salt water, chlorine gas (Cl2) is formed at the anode"

"the only product of this reaction is Cl2"

also more for fun then for price you can get rust by putting a nail or something else made out of iron in a beaker of copper chloride... just wait like 30 seconds (if i remember right) then just scrape of the layer of rust... its much faster, though i'm pretty sure copper chloride is quite expensive, i would still look it up though.

Mr. BIll said...

OK ... normally thermite is not explosive. It just produces a puddle of VERY hot molten iron and some aluminum oxide gas.
.
There is something called "nano-thermite" or "super-thermite" which is a high-explosive. The particles of both metals are so very fine that the reaction proceeds so quickly that it is explosive. This mixture has been used in some biology experiments in which the small, highly controlled explosion, produces a shockwave which is used to force material through the wall of a living cell.
.
It also appears that linear shaped charges of nano-thermite mixed wish sulfur (picture two plastic tubes tied together with the explosive inside both of them) were used to cut steel beams at the WTC when the various governments that pulled that off (making sure to blame Arabs in airplanes) found a way to perform a prohibited controlled demolition of two condemned buildings without the enormous expense of scaffolding to remove them from the top down.
.
In a regular shaped charge: [target] <>explosive> the front of a shell is hollow with the point of the empty triangle against the explosive and the wide end open behind the nose of the shell. The explosion penetrates anything the shell hits. This is widely used in anti-tank rounds. With the linear shaped charge, the hollow part is against the item to be cut and the pointy part is between the two pipes. This can be used to make straight-line cuts in steel and other materials. Normal shaped charges in backpacks was the method used by German paratroopers to blast holes in the Maginot line and persuade the French troops to surrender and come out before they pumped in the poison gas.
.
So, no. Unless there was some water trapped under the thermite, which would expand very quickly and blast the molten iron around, there would not likely be an explosion from the thermite alone. The only time I set thermite off was in a small glass bottle in a camp fire. I could see the glow as the reaction took place, but the bottle did not even break. I was really surprised by that.
.
