How To Tell If Someone Is Lying:

There are nine basic signs that liars exhibit. Not all of these signs may be witnessed, and not all mean that they are lying. They are just guidelines as to the body language that many liars display.

1) A change in the tone and pitch of the person's voice.
2) An increased or decreased rate of speech.
3) Stumbling over sentences, stopping to think during a sentence, increased use of 'um' and 'uh'.
4) A change in the amount of eye contact. Normal people make eye contact between one-fourth and one-half of the time that they are talking to you. Liars tend to make less eye contact.
5) Turning their shoulders away.
6) Looking very far to the left, right, up or down more than twice.
7) Touching their face or scratching their head.
8) Involuntary moving, jiggling, scratching, or other fidgeting of the legs or feat.
9) Crossing of the arms and/or legs.

Yeah but the people that the CIA and secret service interrogate are serious criminals who practice to make sure they get their stories and act straight. This guide is great for the every-day-liar.

You know, some people have communication disorders that make it very hard to stay focused or calm when speaking. Stuttering, cluttering, or ADHD make it very problematic to hold a conversation at times.

If you assume everyone is lying to you, you have an issue with trust, which is no one else's fault but your own.

This doesn't always work because some people do these things anyway. For example, I have a hard time keeping eye contact, lying or not lying.

Looking down can be a sign of submission, the result of a guilty conscience. It can also be a meditated way of understanding the gravity of the disagreement, and for the sake of speaking directly and to the point, looking away to maximize concentration. Use your own discretion.
Policemen use a general rule of thumb that if you look up and to the left, you are generally lying. This is not always true, in which case they ask questions that require creative thought to see which way they look. This is your "lie" side. Obviously a somewhat presence of dominance is required via hard eye contact to ensure eye direction does occur. On a side note, down and to the left is considered to be accessing more emotional thoughts, or just being emotional.
Freud taught that a person usually has a reflex when they lie as a child, and that is to cover their mouth with their hand. Its a subconscious way of "inhaling" the too soon spoken "bad word"...as if to take it back. As adults we have a modified form of this, its called touching our faces, predominantly the mouth. You can look for which direction their feet are pointed if they are standing, away from you is not to confront you. Also how they distribute their weight is taken into account. If its leaned onto the back foot, and stance is changed every few moments, that is another indicator. Yes shoulder position is a strong indication of where interest lies. And if they are lying, some part of them wants not to confront you. Head tilt is another way of determining where ones's attention rests. Obviously wherever it's tilted...you get it. Frequent blinking, pupil dilation(this is difficult), and rapid eye repositioning, frequent yawning, scratching the same place repeatedly(such as nose) are other indicators as well. Im going to stop before I get recruited as a profiler.

like 56% of the time? or 56% of the time? You can invent you own statistics if you like, and they may serve you well, but your speaking from ignorance. Between profiling, polygraph, behavioral specialists, social psychologists, biological data and REAL statistics....you can read a person like a book. Or it could be bs. your call.

Wise up. Of course people do all these things when they are not lying. That's not the point. However, when a person is lying these are some common things that are involved. They are clues that someone might be lying.

Just like chest pain is a clue you might be having a heart attack. The clues tell you to pay attention and dig a little deeper.

You People are starting to piss me off leave the fucking dude alone, your such egotistical pricks, shut the fuck up. Your ALL pissing me off... This guy is great, so what if he makes a mistake, his flamethrower works, I like his Ninja Mask ( I fucked around wit my friends like that with the flamethrower) The CD thing was cool, some band made a song i didn't like so I bought 10 of their CD's and destroyed them, also another way to destroy a CD is to simply put soap on it, then put bleach. If it still works, you can, just, put some lighter fluid on it and some kerosene, and give it a few squirts with ur flamethrower (make shure you have wood and stuff next to it, it'll be funny) so ya, leave him the fuck alone, he's cool. It's for a GENERAL person, ADHD isn't in GENERAL people, GENERAL people don't Studder, and such, I studder so what, it still works... The CIA statistics were bullshit too, the CIA gets criminals 30% of the time, because the American government is completely fucked up. Take Bush for example, over in Iraq hes building 3 i think, 3 million dollar power plants, he's pretty much building the Iraqies some Golden bombing targets...Why waste money over there. In America today theres still people starving to death, homeless people, why waste money over there, I say, "Hey you wanna bomb the US we'll bomb you back" I think we should just "level" Iraq, but I'm getting so off topic, I'm a HUGE talker, anyways, the point is, leave him alone he's a cool kid.

One surefire way to catch someone in a lie is to ask them to describe the situation that you think they are lying about. If their eyes look up and to the right, they are telling the truth. Reason: This is an INVOLUNTARY reaction of the eyes when a person is accessing the part of their brain that controls their memory and visual recall. If their eyes look up and to the left, they are lying. Reason: This is also an involuntary reaction of the eyes when a person is accessing the part of the brain that controls creativity. This method is 99% foolproof. Only trained professionals can get away with lying when this method is used. Try it on someone...But be sure not to let them in on what you are doing or it won't work. Another reliable method uses the dilation and contraction of the pupils but I don't have the 3 hours it would take to explain how to use this method or how it works

    RE the quote:
"Saying that whenever people do that they are lying is complete BS
MAny people I know have most of those problems, as well as myself. Due to communication disorders. You'd be well advised to stop making generalizations."

Yes, it's quite obvious from your grammer, lack of sentence structure, and punctuation that a communication disorder exists. Don't take it out on the blogger! Did you bother to read the beginning of the post? I'll quote it for you.

"Not all of these signs may be witnessed, and not all mean that they are lying. They are just guidelines as to the body language that many liars display."

Did you see the words, "not all" and "guidlines" anywhere? I did. It was neat! Real words with meanings and everything! The gist of the post was that the items listed will be exibited more than usual or less than usual for that particular person when they are lying. Understand? Don't get your panties in a twist because you didn't understand. Pick up a book and learn something. Do something useful that is actually GOOD for people. Or slit your throat while jumping off a cliff strapped with explosives after drinking poison. I don't care which. Ta ta.

PS: for a definition of any confusing or misunderstood words please consult your local dictionary.

This is just susposed to be a guide, no the everyday person can't be completly sure that someone is lying, but these are a few good indications. You obviously know nothing about NLP. Some people move their eyes when they lie, and others will look straight into yours.

An easy way to tell a pattern if a person is lying is to ask them 5 simple questions while you look into their eyes. Ask them to deliberatly lie about one of the questions. You will notice a different pattern in eye movement when they lie.

Its a good way to entertain friends, and know when they're lying to you at the same time.

I'd be wiser to make generalizations. Its not a science of "if this then this"; its an art. Just because I make a statement doesn't mean I think its true under any condition. Take it easy smartass(s). Use common sense. The mere prescence of these things may mean nothing, but an exaggeration of one of them might mean something.

    Take Care,

I think many of you that are so quick to disbelive the truth in this are actually just afraid it is and thus don't want others to belive it either.

Nothing can ever be completely acurate all the time, but in general these are proven signs of increased mental stress and creativity, if your recalling something from memory you have no reason to be creating anything now do you.

Yes, there are other factors that in rare cases can give false postives, but more often than not what is listed above is spot on, take it from experence.

  36. Anonymous8:01 PM

actually, it depends on what kind of memory you are accessing, episodic memory tends to change over time even if the person believes they are quoting it from the images in their mind, there is a slow loss of detail that is often made up for by schematic thinking and generalizing... implicit and procedural memory tend to be the only kinds not affected by this type of degradation.

    uhm, 1 Question...
who's right & left is that? mine or the liar's?

    -----

Who you gonna believe when they answer that question, if you don't already know how to interpret their eye movements? And it also depends on if they're right or left handed. So you can ask them to write something, but if they're ambidextrous you're out of luck.

Here's a great riddle on this subject. You are lost on a small Pacific island, with a big storm coming, trying to get to the boat dock, and you come to a fork in the road. The road sign, which says, "this way to the boat dock, that way into the jungle", has been blown down, like in Jurassic Park. there is a native standing there. Now on this island, there are two tribes, one always lies, one always tells the truth. They both all look alike, (and they both all always wear shades). What ONE question can you ask this guy to ensure that you can get to the boat dock and off the island safely before the storm hits? You can't point and ask if that's the right road, because you'll get the same answer from a liar or a truthteller whether it is or isn't: "Yes"

Answer in my next post. And no peeking.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Anonymous3:43 AM

The one question would be this: "If I asked you (pointing) if this is the road to the boat dock, would you say yes?" Assume it is the road. Both types of natives would say yes, one lying and one telling the truth. Same with pointing at the wrong road. Both would say "no"

Alternate single question: Pull out your Smith and Wesson, point it at the native's head, and say, take me to the boat dock if you want to live. You DO want to live, don't you? One will say yes, one will say no, but since it's a rhetorical question, the answer doesn't matter.

To everyone saying it's "Bs" because either they, or someone they know has a communication disorder: please stop acting like he said "This is a full-proof way of telling if someone is lieing". He clearly said they are just indications. It really comes down to perception, intelligence, and attention to detail. Anyone can lie and not be deteced if they are truely aware of their bodily functions. For example: when I lie (Don't get on a soapbox, we all do/have lied at some point) I just genuinely beleive what I am saying. I tell myself it is the truth, and then it comes out as such. I would suggest a tip for detecting lies: constantly keep them mentally unbalanced. That is, throw random questions out at random times; interrupt them with a new question, re-ask questions multiple times in this supprise-barrage of questioning (this is where attention to detail comes into play). All in all just use your "gut", or instinct rather. Because in the end you are the one who decides is they are lieing or not, so choose wisely because you could lose friends or otherwise should you make a mistake and they hold it against you.

To all the people who are defending the poster's guidelines: If so many people (who have by chance found this obscure blog) are agreeing that not all people that do those things are liars, then there must be a lot more that feel the same way. In which case the probability of the original blogger's theory changes. It becomes like saying that every time a person's stomach gurgles then the person's going to throw up. This statement isn't necessarily true. The person could just be hungry, need to take a good poop, or be digesting food. It's true that more times than not the stomach gives us warning before we throw up but the gurgling theory is still false. And likewise, the "How to Tell If Someone Is Lying," tips are also just as pointless.

That I read also , that the eye patterns are opposite , depending on being right handed or left handed. So Unless you know enough details about someone, eye pattern isn't enough. Actually, liars don't make less eye contact. A person, typically, makes more eye contact if they are lying.

Also, the 'crossing of the arms and/or legs' can go into a category of distancing one's self. In English, a liar tends to cross their arms or legs to 'distance' himself from the person they are lying to. Other forms of this can be using distancing language, such as not using contractions in their sentences. A normal person would say, 'I didn't eat your cookie.' A liar might say, 'I did not eat your cookie.'

A liar might also repeat himself. A normal person typically says, 'I didn't eat your cookie' while a liar might say, 'No, I did not eat your cookie.'

another way is to touch the person's hand. if it is cold, the person is most likely lying because the person wants to get away from you, so the blood will rush into the feet. saw it on some TV show, so im not sure what kind of cold... I think not the usual body heat???

It's a statistic, an average amongst everyday people. Not pathological liars, psychopaths or sociopathic lunatics! Some are better than others at hiding the normal subconscious reaction, no doubt. For the most part its a guideline.

another way to tell if someone is lying is to ask them a question and when they are about to answer you shout "LIAR!" really loud before he or she can answer. if the person looks puzzled he is lying.

These factors aren't useful so much for interrogating someone, but you easily can use this to help determine lying in a normal conversation, if considering other factors of the individual you are talking to.

I am here to say that people who have ADHD or Asperger's, , people that have trouble with communication, do not usually communicate the same way people without these problems do. It does not look at all like people who are trying to lie and get away with it. In fact it really doesn't look like regular behavior at all. You would be able to tell the difference. I have a relative who has Aspergers and a friend with ADHD and neither of them share the same kind of communication skills as people without these issues. It is very noticeable and you would probably pick up on it right away if you have ever actually been around someone like this...For example, my relative with Aspberger's has a very difficult time understanding social cues, and therefore his reactions time in live conversation is totally off (really delayed). I think if you know what your looking for when trying to identify someone who is being dishonest, its actually pretty easy to tell. Unless you are a skilled liar and control your body movements, most people have the reactions that are described here when trying to lie. That is because they are unconscious minute reactions that your body has when delivering misinformation. I figured this out because I caught my boyfriend in a lie and have seen him lie before and he had the exact same reaction with me as the other person. He did the eye roll, up and to the left and also had an exaggerated pitch which he unconsciously changes when trying to cover something up.Just have to know what you're looking for. :-)
