How To Make Thermite:

Now, I am not going to tell you guys what thermite is, or what you can do with it. Just do a Google search and you'll find tons of sites telling you a bunch of uses for it. I will however, tell you how to make the stuff.

Obtaining the Aluminum
1) Go to a machine shop. They will usually give you aluminum powder for sweeping the floor or something.
2) Break open an Etch-A-Sketch, the stuff inside is pure aluminum powder.
3) Go to a paint store, they usually have powdered aluminum that people use to mix into paints to give it pigment.
4) Get a grinder, and something made of aluminum. Good ideas are soda cans, bike frames, and lacrosse sticks. Start grinding the aluminum and collect the sparks in a container.
5) Search eBay, they sell it for pretty cheap.

Obtaining the Iron Oxide (Rust)
1) Take some steel wool then put it in a jar and then cover it wool with water. Use a magnet to make sure the steel wool doesnt float during the reaction process. Next, put in 5 tablespoons of regular bleach into the water and 5 tablespoons of regular vinager. Wait a day or so and then filter the brown paste with a coffee filter. Leave it out to dry overnight.
2)
Go to a paint store, they usually have powdered iron oxide that people use to mix into paints to give it pigment.
3) Connect wires to a direct current (9-volt battery), strip both ends and put them into a saltwater solution. Let them sit for five minutes. One of them will start bubbling more than the other. This is the POSITIVE(+) wire. Put a nail tied to the positive wire into the jar. Now put the negative wire in the other end. Now let it sit overnight and in the morning scrape the rust off of the nail & repeat until you have a bunch of rust on the bottom of the glass. Let it dry out, and crush it into a powder.
4) Search eBay, they sell it for pretty cheap.

Mixing the Stuff
Thermite is 8 grams of iron oxide to 3 grams of aluminum. The formula is by weight but because aluminum is very light, it will appear to be approximately a 50-50 mix. Put them together in a container and mix them until it is an even mixture. If you want, mix four parts thermite with one part clay or Play-Doh and knead thoroughly for moldable thermite.

Igniting
Thermite needs a lot of heat to light, that means magnesium. Find some magnesium ribbon, or a sparkler that contains magnesium and put it into a pile of thermite. Light it with a torch, and run!

On the Subject of aluminium giving you Alzimers etc and being BAD, does everyone know its the active ingredient in antipersperant deoderants?

probably why i'm so stupid

If you rub a thermite paste on your balls in one hour you will have an erection that lasts for hours.

If you rub a thermite paste on your balls it will burn BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IDIOTS - most of you.

Firsty, the thermite is very hot etc. etc., im not here to talk about that.

THE Cl2 GAS ... OMG

Using a 9V battery will NOT produce Cl2, the Cl ions will just stay in solution. You need to get it VERY hot, meaning you need a HUGE current, so if you are doing it in water you need a MUCH bigger voltage than 9V.

Also, Cl2 gas isnt easy to form, and alot of other methods said are wrong, plus you dont want that shit, you want the Na (pure) from the salt, then you mix that with conc acid to make a boom.

BTW - Cl gas is green, so IF somehow you did see green gas, dont breathe it in :)

Anonymous said...

just take railroad stakes put them in
bleach and there you go.

easy.

i tried the basic combination of bleach and vinegar in a 2:1 ratio respectively, and got immediate results. thanks whoever suggested it.

I have never seen so much incorrect information on a site. As a chemist, I had to comment.

Chlorine and sodium hypochlorite can be produced by produced by electrolysis of NaCl (salt) and water. At low enough concentrations of salt and lower voltage, mainly O2 and H2 will be produced. Under certain conditions (higher voltage, high concentration of salt), Cl2 will be produced. In practice, most of this will dissolve in the solution, and react with the NaOH formed at the other electrode to form sodium hypochlorite (bleach)(It does not have to get "very hot" as one poster said). Molten Na does not form, the Na formed reacts imediately with the water to form NaOH. This is a very common process often used to chlorinate pools spiked with salt. My explanation is simplified, but points out the main facts.

Cl2 is not mustard gas. The correct chemical name is given in another post.

Ammonia + bleach makes chloramine, not phosgene, mustard gas or Cl2.

sodium hydroxide + bleach makes nothing, and does not release chlorine. In fact, bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is commonly made by bubbling Cl2 in a NaOH solution.

Na is not an explosive. It does react vigorously with water to form H2, which ignites spontaneously.

What is the hell rustic acid?

I could go on.

Anonymous said...

With the electrolysis you will NOT produce Chlorine. The bubbling is Hydrogen when the oxygen and hydrogen separate so the oxygen can react with the iron. The Hydrogen is left alone as H2 and bubbles out. The salt acts as a catalyst to speed up the reaction. A good idea for thermite is to put it on someone's car hood and light it. that's sweet!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I think he meant HFEO (I don't know the subscript) for rustic acid. But, buddy, um it doesn't exist. There's no such thing as rustic acid. Seriously you guys need to frickin' learn something about chemistry before you try to teach others about it, or try to mess with it. Know what you're doing before you do it.

I'm also saying this as a chemist!

they use the salt water thing in pools, its not dangerous

I know how to make my own AL powder but i dont know how to make GOOD iron oxide :(

Anonymous said...

i like cheeze on my thermite.

Anonymous said...

umm ya abotu the guy who said salt water with electron current makes chlorine.. umm ya it does make chlorine but it is aqueous chlorine ion since NaCl(table salt is a ionic compound.. in other words it makes no dangerous gas and you can run all the electricity through salt water you want .. i dont knwo why you would tho since rust is everywhere and if you like in a city where rust is not redily available like us hillbillys the paint shop is the best idea. tho they will not give you any metal powders if you get aluminum and iron (iii) oxide at same time the staff is versed in making of harmfull substances so 1 person buy the alumninum and have a friend buy the other a day or so later( based on personal experience)

One-Step Rust Converter Primer Sealer doesn't realy convert rust to primer, but further oxidized it to Fe203 or "Red Rust" to Fe304 or "Black/Blue Rust" which has many protective atributtes, and also makes for a much better thermite compound. as for the Al, your bet bet with it is to grind it under Moter oil. this prevents problems with asperation, and also prevents oxidation, which in turn, (I belive) makes for a better aluminothermic reaction (to be more specific). When mixing the Fe3O4 with the Al, the Al should bond with the Fe3O4. Once the elements are bonded, it should be safe to remove it form the oil, as the AL will already have been oxidized by the Fe3O4, and thus wont accept futher oxidation.or... maybe I've been wasting motor oil :P

Warning: Motor oil is a MAJOR carcinagen and the utmost caution should be used.

And BTW, for the DA that said "WTF whit da CL gas issue? YOU ARE MAKING AN EXPLOSIVE!! Like it matters if is a bit more dangerous..." Where the hell is the fun in blowing your head off if you're going to die from a nerve agent anyway?

As for a cheap, easy to obtain ignition? well, just grind a SMALL amount of Al and Fe3O4 very fine, make a small amout of thermite solution, dip about 5 inches of a average gunpowder wick in it. insert the end with the dried thermite solution in the thermite and ignite. note: I have not tested this. But the finer it is, the easier to ignite. however, the finer it is, the more explosive as well, so do this at your own risk. if this does not ignite the Thermite solution, take the flint out of a lighter, melt it down, and pu this on the wick above where the solution will be. this flint ignites at low tempatures and burns at high enough tempatures to ignite the fine ground solution.

okay, I'm bored. goodnight, and goodluck.

+ you don't need alot of thermite. replace the mass of thermite with a mass of ZINC.

If you buy a small amount of powdered aluminum online, once or maybe twice -- no problem. If you buy a small amount of powdered ferrous oxide online, once or maybe twice -- no problem. Make a pattern of it, or buy large amounts, and nothing will happen ... nothing obvious at any rate.

But when the police become interested in local burning incidents that bear the chemical traces of thermite, you'll see that SOMEHOW they will know to come straight round to your door and start asking you very hard questions, just for a start.

If you really want to play with this stuff, either restrict yourself to backyard experiments that don't cause actual property damage or do the work and harvest the materials yourself. A word to the wise ... Big Brother is watching.

This is the smartest comment anyone has posted yet.

I've heard the ratio is 2:1, so which is the right one?

Anonymous said...

physical science all over again...

Anonymous said...

"I've heard the ratio is 2:1, so which is the right one?"

the ratio is 2:1 by # of moles, and 1:4 (roughly) by mass.

note the equasion:

Fe2O3 + 2Al -> Al2O3 + 2Fe

1 part Fe2O3 to 2 parts Al.

Anonymous said...

If you were to perform electrolysis on salt water the product would be hydrogen gas ASWELL as chlorine gas

2H2O(l) + 2NaCl(aq) -> H2(g) + 2OH- + Cl2(g) + 2Na2+(aq)

They use this to extract sodium from its salt form, it is usually conducted with a MOLTEN sodium hydroxide(salt) as the water is reduced in favour of the Sodium.

The fact that the salt is molten means that heating the salt WILL NOT produce chlorine gas, UNLESS it was heated to 1465 degrees celius (good luck)

Anonymous said...

Have some more fun:
electrolysis of molten caustic soda
collect sodium from cathode. be sure to collect about half a pound. whilst using gloves throw said sodium into lake. bang. repeat until bored, and a bonus that no chlorine is produced.

dont know if this has been covered yet, But thermite is NOT illegal, at least not here in the US, those of you overseas my want to check into it.

I have made thermite many times (a B.S. in Chemistry does help). Rust is easy to make. Put steel wool in a pyrex dish and pour bleach in to cover it. NOTE - this gets warm and keep away from children.
About 12-24hrs later, it is simply rust. Rinse it with water and then dry it in the oven. I don't recall where we obtained Aluminium but that is not hard to get. I mixed it and then lit it outside with a magnesium ribbon and it did react nicely. NOTE: do not do this on a stone (the stone make shatter) and do not stare at the reaction (intense UV rays) and step back (molten iron may spatter).

I found a new way to light it use gunpowder and a fuse to light the gunpowder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its so odvious u will easily have enough time to get the fuck out of the way

And I cant spell for shit so all you grammar correcting freaks out there if you don’t like it skip this note

i havent tried but a fure might even ligh it alone al long as there is gunpowder in it

now all the people Arguing about the chlorine gas shut the fuck up who cares all you need to do to fix it is make it outside and if there is chlorine gas you’ll be safe and if there isn’t you got some fresh air for gods sake literally he’s crying about the argument put it to rest

Oh and by the way I’m a year 11 (form 5) and all I really care about is that this can melt every fucking thing u can find and I think I speak for at least 90 % of the other people who read this that that’s all they care about as well

Anonymous said...

Not only can you use red rust, but you also can use black rust. this is obtained by burning steel wool with a propane torch.

Anonymous said...

oh, and the ratio by mass should be

Fe2O3 : Al

3:1

Fe3O4 : Al

2.1 : 1

Anonymous said...

DOes anyone know of a container which can contain a thermite reaction without melting? I want to do this, but don't really have a place I can do it without setting something on fire that I didn't want to burn.

Anonymous said...

if you guys wanna try something pretty cool with steal wool. take a decent amount of it and tie a metal or aluminium wire around it and threw the center light it on fire and whip it around in circles it creats a shower of sparks everywhere and looks sick at night. the steal wool gets pretty hot tho and will sometimes melt threw aluminiun wires before its all gone. try it out though.

hey i was looking up the aluminum powder on ebay and there are all these different types of mesh...

which is a good one to get to make the thermite? is the worth getting 600 mesh versus the 100 mesh one?

no u dont have time to run after its lit. when it gos off it sparks and stuff. it burns at 3000 degrees multin iron. you dont want to get burned with that stuff. please use a wick. or you can stand back and pop it with roman candels that works too.

Anonymous said...

ok just so u know dont try lighting thermite with anything other than magnesium, magnesium ribbon is best, because u can have a serious problem on your hands. I am telling u this from personal experiance, i was using a blow touch, which i had used lots of times before with no problems, but the last time i used it the thermite got red hot but did't ignight causeing the aluminum to melt to the iron oxide (rust). well the thermite didn't ignight so my friends and I just guessed it was a bad batch or something, but 10 mins later it ignighted for unknown reasons putting me in the hospital with magor 2nd degree burns in other words I looked like a loony toon character after an explosion, i still have some minor scaring from it, so if your going to use thermite do it right and dont half ass it like I did!!!

No, you won't get Chlorine gas from ionizing the saltwater, all that you would get is Cl- which is an ion, and acts entirely different than the pure Chlorine that has one less electron.

Arthur_of_Old said...

In the military thermite is not considered something to play with. You can not put out the fire; it has to burn out. IT IS OXIDIZED, once started you won't put it out and water, due to the heat can make it worse if you use that.

yh yh does anyone actually know it was used to burn down building seven the last third of the world trade center and it it went down on the same day th@ the twin towers did but no one documented it. it can burn @ over 2500 degrees celcius so be very careful with it and it starts after heavily after 9 seconds so running unless your asafa powell would not work. if this can destroy a whole building just think what it will do to a human body.

Anonymous said...

ok PEOPLE FORGET THE STRIP OF MAGNESIUM you know why if you live in an aeras where they use coal for house heating
go to the store get a coal firestarter THERE COMPLETELY FILLED WITH MAGNESIUM and they have about a two to three mintute delay

Anonymous said...

"One of them will start bubbling more than the other. This is the POSITIVE(+) wire."

This is incorrect. The NEGATIVE wire will bubble more (there is twice as much hydrogen in water as there is oxygen)

Anonymous said...

That is some wild stuff.

Anonymous said...

Damnit. I can't get this to work. I'm doing the 2:1 ratio with steal wool. 2 bleach 1 vinegar. I can't seam to filter correctly. Hi guys,
is 400 mesh/38 micron particle size AL powder to fine for use in thermite?

And also who gives sh#t if there is any CL gas produced? if your worried about it open a window or something!

Anonymous said...

just melting sodium chloride isn't enough. once u have the salt in liquid form, you would have to run a very strong current through in order to make the chlorine atoms give the sodium back their electrons. ionic bonds are the strongest chemical bonds.

we use the stuff to weld railway tracks love it!!

I had made some thermite a while ago, it burned through 3 2-in steel plates, I thought it was pretty cool. But on a funnier note, my friend is in the hospital pending arson charges cause of this. we were talking about thermite and what it could do. well that mother fucker decided to steal a Gun case and try to melt through it. the police report said it melted right into 20lbs of gunpowder and several different rounds....yea please be careful this shit is pretty dangrous

"There's a difference between weight and mass, you know."

Not on Earth, smartass. They aren't different anywhere you can assume it would be applied unless we're making Thermite on the Moon and you need 50g of something. THEN you need to know by weight or mass.

More funny things to respond to...Thermite taking down the Twin Towers. Yes, the planes were a lie.

Tanks being made from titanium...HELL.NO. Tanks have, and to my knowledge HAVENEVER been made of titanium. Any protection they have from things like thermite are completely different sciences and materials that don't include TITANIUM armor.

This doesn't mean you should try to go run around burning through tank's armor, it won't work, and there's a decent chance the armor plating you put it on will explode. Not because it reacts with anything, but on some tanks there are plates made to just fucking explode, helps to disrupt certain types of missiles.

Anonymous said...

You guys are crazy.

You're freaking out about a tiny bit of chlorine gas that may or may not be created...

But you're making a substance that burns at half of the temperature of the SUN.

Also, maybe you should look into UV-curable cements, i.e. dental cements. These are used when a dentist fills a cavity or a number of other procedures. And when they use the UV light to cure it, it gives off CYANIDE GAS. Which is a lot more deadly than chlorine gas, by volume.

Oh, and while you're at it, better speak out against dihydrogen monoxide, which kills thousands upon thousands of people every year and is found virtually everywhere.

Christ I can't believe I've been sucked into this.... Grinding aluminum on a typical grinding wheel is potentially dangerous primarily because it will foul (clog) the wheel and eventually cause the wheel to fail e.g. fly apart. I have seen it myself on several occasions while working in aviation/aerospace industry. It does happen and besides you don't want to clog up your daddy's grinder anyway. He'll kick your ass. Aluminum grinds like butter. Always wear eye protection and a codpiece (for effect). Imagine me laughing when you choose to ignore this one.

Anonymous said...

Umm... wrong about the chlorine gas. The sodium and chlorine separate already when dissolved in water because it's an ionic compound. However, for the chlorine to leave the sodium behind in the water, it would take a energy (more than a 9 volt would produce) or have to be singly replaced by another element. Since the only VII level element more reactive than Chlorine in Florine, then you'd have to mix that in somehow. Also, if the Chlorine was leaving the salt and leaving Sodium in the water 1) You'd have a precipitate of pure Sodium and 2) Sodium is volatile in water, ergo you'd have sparks/small fire.

What you're actually seeing is a process called electrolysis, specifically, of water, where the electricity is breaking the covalent bond of water and producing hydrogen and oxygen gas.

Yay science.

really, on a scale from 1-10 how dangerous is thermite (10 being most dangerous), really worth the risk to see an awesome exothermic reaction?

Anonymous said...

Heres what I have found to be the easiest way to make / ignite thermite.

Materials: Potassium permanganate,(only a little needed), iron oxide from paint pigments, aluminum powder (off of internet) or paint pigment (aluminum oxide), glycerin (only a little needed), some clay, and finally a plastic container or flowerpot.

step 1. Stir the iron oxide with the aluminum carefully then mash up with the clay, remember while it should not start reacting without extreme heat: SAFETY FIRST

step 2. Put it in the container and put a SMALL amount of potassium permanganate on top.

step 3. Make sure your legs aren't cramped up and you have a clear path, put a drop or two of glycerin on top, and run like hell

step 4. You should have a good 10 seconds or so before the irreversible thermite reaction takes place and molten globs of iron start flying.

step 5. Cackle maniacly.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned the easiest and best source of iron oxide. Any hardware store will sell you Concrete Coloring powder. The red color is very fine, very pure red iron oxide. Simple, fast, inexpensive.

Person 1: Running a current through NaCl and water is going to make some Chlorine gas.

Person 2: No it's not, you're an idiot. If you had taken basic high school chemistry you would know that.

Well, who's right? Both of them...sort of. Taking high school chemistry will lead you to believe that H2 and O2 are the products you will get. They are the primary products.

You will also, however, get a very small amount of chlorine gas, due to a concept of overvoltage. It takes very little voltage to split water, but because you are using a 9v battery, you will also be oxidizing the Cl- ions in the solution, but just a few of them.

Of course, you shouldn't take my word for it, because I'm just an anonymous internet poster who claims to have taken just 3 years of chemistry. So con't, find a legitimate source:

http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/chemweek/cl2&naoh/Cl2&NaOH.html

This is from the University of Wisconsin, and explains it all quite nicely.

Instead of worrying about this stuff, just use something else as your electrolyte like baking soda or acetic acid.

Also, to correct another common error, know that Bleach and Ammonia make a lot of products, the deadly ones being various Chloramines. Look it up. Not, as some people have suggested: Not Chlorine gas, not Mustard gas (which contains sulfur, something neither reactant has, and not Phosgene (which contains carbon, again, something neither reactant has)

Learn your chemical combo's... chlorine and amonia makes amonium chloride and it will kill you before you realize what's happening. It sears the lining of your nose and lungs and interfers with oxygen absorbsion as well as being heavier than air I.E. it collects in low places. It is nothing to play with but it does make a great cleaner.

As for getting the right ingredients in uniform, usable condition, look around. I've found all of the ingredients at trade and gun shows in nice 5 pound bags.

Phosgene gas is a by-product of freon. When freon is exposed to enough heat and mixed with the open atmosphere it converts into phosgene gas.

If you make a compound of aluminum and iron, lay it down and spray it with oxygen from a scuba tank and pressurized water, will it create thermite?

Your blood is an electrolyte solution, consisting of water and salt. if electrolysis in saltwater made chlorine gas I'm pretty sure you'd be dead. Now heating salt up is a really bad idea also, because the chlorine gas will react with itself and become permanently trapped without proper ventilation. Also molten sodium is a really bad idea too, since it reacts violently with nearly everything, although you could store this in oil and then you would be alright

Aluminum powder: take a bunch of aluminum foil squeeze it with pliers till its like super compacted and grind it with something into fine powder.

Anonymous said...

You can buy this stuff already made but with brass flakes mixed in. It's called "Cadweld" and it too will burn through a street sewer cover or an engine block. It comes in "shots" of various sizes and includes magnesium powder to ignite it with a small propane torch. The magnesium is packed in the plastic stopper/lid, just bend and pinch to cause it to loosen, pour on top of the shot and light with torch or a bunch of match-heads piled up. Cadweld uses graphite or ceramic molds to weld large copper wires or other metal parts. Don't mind the brass flakes, This stuff burns through anything metal just fine.

tanks arn't made of titanium, and yes, thermite can melt through titanium.

Anonymous said...

There are some dangerous people on here.

A few safety tips:
Use a long fuse. if you're using magnesium ribbon and lighting it by hand use at least 3 inches, ideally about 6.

A better ignition method is potassium permanganate (violet crystals) and glycerine (colourless oily liquid), put a few grams of permanganate on top of the thermite and add a few drops of glycerine. This should give you at least 15 seconds to get away.

In both cases, test it first by setting up a TINY amount so you know what to expect.

Don't use it anywhere near stuff that might catch on fire, bits of molten iron will jump out like sparks.

Because thermite contains it's own fuel and oxidiser it cannot be put out. DO NOT put water on it, you'll get the same result as putting water in an oil fire - a face full of superheated steam.

Just to point this out, thermite makes LIQUID IRON. It's essentially a one-use blast furnace. This stuff is VERY hot.

Thermite is very safe if used properly and treated with respect. If used stupidly you'll be lucky to get arrested.

Has anyone tried the with titanium oxide to make molten titanium yet? It can be done but other ingredients need to be added. For staters the rust/ iron oxide is replaced with the titanium. Titanium oxide is a hundred times more abundant naturally than is copper. Well anyways someone should try it. It was in a popular science magazine recently.

It is terribly saddening to see how much stupid there is in the world today. This line of Q&A only reinforces that. Am I talking about making incendiary and/or exothermic compounds? Nope. Am I talking about Hydrochloric or Chlorine gas? Nope. I'm talking about all you idiots who cannot even compose a simple English sentence correctly, let alone being able to tell the difference between "to" "two" and "too". You know..."Hey mom, can we go two the mall and spend my too dollars? And can Kenny go to?". The really scary thing is that some of you won't even be able to tell what's wrong with that sentence! What happens to this country when you grow up and get old enough to vote? What happens when (God forbid) one of you becomes President?!? It's no wonder that our economy is in the shits and that Forrest Gump is the new valedictorian and that separatists have run amok. For God's sake, put down the drugs, pull up your pants and LEARN SOMETHING IN SCHOOL!!!

LOL, I have a type 33 ATF explosives license and my own garage sized magazine, and I host large scale (20 feet) model rocketry in Las Vegas.

I really want people to learn this interesting form of chemistry, thermite doesn't have a lot of practical uses that can't be done better with a mig welder, but it sure shows you chemistry power. You can also make a LOT of money with it, so good luck.

So, the Aluminium Oxide vs Aluminium debate is still open. So far, I've just seen people flaming each other for saying the same thing. No one has actually answered if using the oxide will still work.

In short, grinding up aluminium will produce mostly oxide, unless you do it in a oxygen free environment, which isn't exactly a DIY possibility. There will still be some pure Al inside the particles, I'd imagine, but the finer you go, the more oxide you get. So whats the real deal? Does it matter? Will it still work, just less effectively?

Anonymous said...

WTF whit da CL gas issue? YOU ARE MAKING AN EXPLOSIVE!! Like it matters if is a bit more dangerous...

um its not an explosive its an incindiary

Anonymous said...

People tend to forget that tap water from a city or suburb has Chlorine in it, that's what keeps you from getting sick off of dirty water. Now it may be in smaller doses than say pool water(parts per million maybe more depending on where you live) but it is still there making city water safe to drink. Don't give me that I ran it through a water filter cuz most filters are carbon filters and don't really remove the Cl just the heavy minerals. Iron, lead, sulfur, Calcium.

The only real way to get pure H2O is to buy it or get a distiller really.

Any way unless you are going to try this bathtub size or even kiddy pool size I wouldn't worry to much about killing yourself with Cl gas. If you are that worried about it then don't do it, or do it outside. Very simple thought right. Science is not for the weak of heart or mind.

on eBay and other places online you can get a pound of thermite (unmixed but in the correct proportions) along with some magnesium ribbon (for use as an ignition/fuse) all for easily under $20 USD personally I found it for $13 USD Shipped. eBay. So forget the scrounging for the Iron oxide its easily available online and if you do not have a way to grind down some aluminum it is also available online. All you need is Tech grade as it is cheaper and serves the purpose and also Fe3O4 (black iron Oxide) works better than Fe3O3 (Red Iron Oxide) The extra Oxygen molecule helps it burn. And the mix is easy if you make it a 1 to 3 mix being 25% aluminum 75% Iron Oxide. if mixing by volume its 50/50 so it can be as easy as one cup of each and you got 2 cups (volume) of Thermite. Its simple dont over complicate it.also a mix of small particles of aluminum to start the reaction along with more course aluminum will make the reaction last longer. If you want a quick burn get the smallest particle aluminum it will work the same but will react(flame) less but it will be the same temp and you will still get molten aluminum and iron slag. Now go get 5 pounds of it put it in a coffee can and make a crater in the street, or do what the anarcist cook book says to do and place it on top of someones car (on the hood so it melts on the engine if you want to ruin the car forever)

later

To the people mentioning electrolysis producing chlorine gas, yes, it does produce chlorine gas. The reaction flows like this.

Overall process: 2 NaCl (or KCl) + 2 H2O → Cl2 + H2 + 2 NaOH (or KOH)

The KCl is Potassium Chloride, another salt that can be electrolyzed for the production of chlorine gas and that is done so commercially.

To the people talking about smelling Chlorine gas- you're freaking retarded. Measured in ppm (parts per million) the concentration of chlorine gas in the lungs necessary to incite a reaction with the water and cells in your lungs is only 30 ppm. Once it reaches this level of concentration inside the lungs, it begins forming Hydrochloric acid and hypochlorous acid. At 60 ppm you reach the levels where you're guaranteeing yourself some lung damage, even if you don't die.

So if you're the type of moron who thinks it's okay to sniff a beaker to verify chlorine gas, you should put the chemistry set away and never get it back out again.

SAFETY

THE REACTION OCCURS AT EXTREMELY HIGH TEMPERATURES AND CAN SEND MOLTEN DROPLETS OF IRON SQUIRTING ALL OVER. BE CAREFUL!

THE REACTION ALSO EMITS A LOT OF UV LIGHT SIMILAR TO WELDING. DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE FLAME WITHOUT SUITABLE EYE PROTECTION, OR YOU RISK PERMANENTLY DAMAGING YOUR EYESIGHT.

Note: SUNGLASSES WILL NOT PROTECT YOU, you will need a welding mask or similar to block the UV light, otherwise don't look at the flame directly. There's a reason welders wear special masks.

All that being said, great instructions, be safe, and have fun.

Thermite - Used in things called Cad Welds. Used to bond copper cable onto pipelines for cathodic protection. Already has the magnesium in it so it can be ignited with a flint lighter. Available from you freindly electrical wholesaler

Thermite - Also used to join railway tracks together. Got a mate who works on the railways. He can get it by the bag full. Lots of fun !

I hope that every single one of the retards who wrote unintelligible gibberish ends up succeeding in making thermite and ends up seriously injured or dead. Oh, yeah, go right ahead and pour water on a thermite reaction. I dare you. Just make sure to get it on camera and have your next of kin post it on YouTube.

I'm sorry to say but the Idiot that uses a grinder (anything BUT a belt grinder) is asking to get injured, Aluminum heats up the entire wheel rather rapidly, there are several end results to this, a) you break your grinder b) the stone breaks c) the stone heats up and yes it can explode, my foreman has the scars to attest to that. so yes use other methods but a grinder, unless it's a belt grinder which is still dangerous.

ok 1 thermite is incendiary not an explosive the easiest way to make it is 2 buy your materials legally. i am a licensed explosives technician and am going to tell u that its making is extremely dangerous and stupid. also magnesium ribbon can be purchased legally from cannonfuse.com and thermate is illegal to manufacture without a federal high explosives manufacturing license bare in mind that this is thermate not thermite which is perfectly legal though dangerous and stupid.
further mythbusters and i myself repeated the expieriment took 1 ton or 2000ibs of thermite and placed it on a car and ignited it it did not burn through the car but did melt it and removed the paint further another way 2 light it is towrap a standard fuse around a pack of matches and ignite it on top of the thermite

waz readin through this and thought id mention a few things. U people r producing a pyrotechnic chemical reaction that has the potential to reach 3000C! If you are still worried about miniscule portions of chlorine gas, than you need to get checked in the head. Second, pouring water on this stuff right after or while its burning is one of the stupidest things you can do. Water coming in contact with the hot slag has the potential to almost instantly evaporate the water, the gas expands creating an "explosion". Its actually just expanding steam, although just is not the word i should be using. This super hot steam has the annoying knack of taking with it the 3000C pieces of slag right into ur retarded eyes. Third, this is not a backyard experiment, this is very dangerous stuff. Make sure you read up on shit this dangerous for a few hours before trying it. Well, have fun!

Ok, a lot of you are idiots, number one, if your trying to make thermite Chlorine Gas, or Mustard gas are the least of your problems so get over it, dying from chlorine would be pleasent then dying from molten iron and stuff from Thermite detnation, Two, if your making a very fine AL powder for thermite, it's going to be worthless cause it'll oxidize when exposed to oxygen, you add carbon to AL to prevent it from oxidizing. Can we please concentrate on melting stuff and blowing diffrent crap up? thank you

Anonymous said...

For all you people worried about making explosives: THIS IS NOT AN EXPLOSIVE!!!

James said...

Apparently if you can find a way to ignite thermite underwater the water will be split into Hydrogen and Oxygen because the thermite reaction tries to obtain extra oxygen from the water this will then burn the hydrogen and oxygen reforming it into water and the process can repeat until the thermite reaction finishes. So burning thermite underwater gives you even more bang for your buck.

Please you people pretending to know stuff. I'm 16 and I know that electrolysis of salt water doesnt make chlorine gas. It might make HCL which is hydrogen cloride (not hydrochloric acid yet)but not much. Plus there is the fact that moles are much bigger than you think. one mole of a gas is usually somewhere near 24 litres. so you would need an awful lotta electrolysis to do that.

One mole of chlorine gas would need 196000 coulombs of energy thats gonna take 4 hours 11 minutes 17 seconds at 13amps. and remeber one amp is enough to kill you. so are you still worried about dying from chlorine gas?

If you want Thermite you can get 6kilograms of iron oxide powder for £18.50.
25 grams of Magnesium ribbon (quite a lot) for £4.99.
And 1kg of aluminium powder for £9.70.
Thats a lot of thermite for just £33.19 and you would probably have some reactants left over.
(sorry if you aren't brittish I am and i dont know my conversion rates).

Another tip is to pre-heat the thermite but only slightly as it burns much better and hotter. dont use a blow torch just leave it in the sun or a greenhouse or something.

Any other things people want help with? I'm only sixteen but next year I am studying course material from the first year of University. so i'm not an expert but I know a thing or two. :)

If you want to get a lot of chlorine gas, mix bleach and ammonia together. Now that's dangerous: Roll-Off Containers

Anonymous said...

In response to the moron who said not to do this because electrolysis of salt water produces chlorine gas; you're right, but it is produced in negligible amounts. The chlorine gas will collect in bubbles around the electrodes, you can see exactly how much is produced if you try it. Even if you breathed in the amount that would be produced from an entire cup of water, you would feel a bit dizzy at the worst. This is perfectly safe to do (aside from the explosion part).

Rubbish Bins said...

Yeah, but it won't make much chlorine gas. And given that there's only enough salt to ionize the water (i.e. regular water already has this much salt in it, but distilled water doesn't) it's probably not going to kill you any faster than sniffing bleach.
