How To Make a Bonfire:

1) You need to create a fire pit or use a pre-made one. To creat a fire pit, dig a big hole away from any trees or anything else flammable. Make sure that the place that are you are making the bonfire allows bonfires, and that the people around are okay with it.

2) Stack wood in a log cabin fashion inside of the pit, building upwards. Make sure to space the wood out to leave a center.

3) Fill the center with wood chippings/ twigs/ newspaper. Only use dry leaves if you don't have anything else as they have a tendency to burn up quickly and be carried away in wind.

4) Use matches to light different points in the center.

5) Blow into center of the "log cabin" appropriately to get the fire to burn hotter.

6) Add additional kindling until center logs catch on fire and embers are created.

As a resident fire builder, I must critique the use of the box fire. This fire produces a more even heat with less flames than other types of fires because it receives less oxygen. As a result, it burns slower and gives off less light. This is better for, say, cooking.
If you are building a bonfire, I suggest using a teepee structure. This allows more oxygen to reach the base and hot gasses are directed upwards to form a very tall flame. This type of fire is easier to light and quickly forms a nice bed of coals that makes maintaining a fire easier.
Your teepee will eventually collapse. At this point your fire will be easy to maintain. Additional logs should be placed as vertical as possible on the burning coals.

But, Teppe fires are harder to build from scratch, and I have built Box Fires with suitable flames.

...it's hard to build a teepee fire? wow how hard is it to lean a few pieces of wood against each other, i've made the teepee myself dozens of time and they work pretty good

why is it that all the fire types mentioned are log cabin and teepee... i just find it funny that their names are based on house structures.

the boxfire (watchfire, as watchtowers that used fires to warn of attacks used this style) technique has always made bigger flames than my teepee fires. It does require some added effort to make sure there is an unobstructed way for oxygen to get to the bottom of the pyre. I have a 2 foot deep hole that I build the tower over. That way ash and such falls down while the fire gets going. Teepee fires are much faster, though. Some people have trouble making a perfect Teepee, so they make a 'lean-to' with one log across the pit and stuff leaning on that. But that's a campfire thing.

If you can't build a stable teepee fire, why are you building a bonfire?

We simply dug a hole so it almost looked like a crater then put bricks in it and a small brick border. We of corse used some mortar too.

omg, the easiest way to make a fire is to get some fast burning wood/leaves/paper or even better palm branches, then stack all of your sticks & wood around this 'till it's like 1 m tall, making sure you have left enough space to light the stuff underneath, then add wood to serve...easy

I work at a resident camp and one of my jobs is to build and maintain campfire, I find the best fire is made from a combination of both log cabin and teepee shapes. build a large log cabin and use the walls to prop the teepee sticks up, then fill the center with kindling, putting paper or other quick burning materials closer to the center. light and blow steadilly under the log cabin. continually add wood.

    1. The old saying "He didn't plan to fail, he failed to plan" applies to bonfire. We are having a bonfire for my son at the end of may and I cut the timber 2 weeks ago. So a decent bonfire requires time for the wood to dry out. The teepee method it the best I have ever used. Initially I just used all the dead brush from the cut trees to make the teepee then pile kindling at three separate points around the teepee within the brush. Newspaper and cardboard are excellent starters for your kindling piles. Light the cardboard or newspaper and put it under the kindling pile, adding as much as needed to keep the fire hot enough to light the kindling. Once the kindling gets hot enough to ignite, start adding more kindling to that, the goal is to add more of the same size to the fire that is burning (you wouldn't want to throw a log on the kindling fire and expect it to burn). Once the kindling fire is nice and hot it will begin to ignite the brush that it is under. When this happens move on to the other kindling piles and repeat until all kindling piles have ignited and the brush over them had ignited as well (the brush means the teepee structure). Once the teepee structure has ignited and is burning, you may start adding logs. The best way to do this is to stack them vertically around the teepee structure. You may stock them end to end as long as they stay vertical. This method gives your bonfire the wow factor because it increases flame height. If your kindling is taking too long to light the brush pile then you can use an accelerant like gas but just use your common sense. Hope this helps.

Here's an idea...stop allowing anonymous posts. Some sort of age verification would be splendid. On the subject of bon fires though, I have always used the teepee method myself. Remember children, fire is hot, not cool dude.

The best way to build a bonfire is to build the one that burns best for you. After it falls and is basically embers. Throw in a log that was soaked in a saturate Strontium Chloride solution. If avaiable Copper Chloride and Barium Chloride work well. As barium and copper have toxic properties make sure to only do these outside.

if yiu want to make your fire change colors just take a copper pipe about4-6" long and a pice of stadard garden hose and stick it in the copper tube or vice versa the fire should change colors im not exactaly shure why this works but it dose......try it e-mail me and sparky.luvr.4ever@hotmail.com good luck to all of you who want to try it.

I'm the type of person who looks at everything scientifically. i understand the concept of building a teepee style fire. i also understand that a box fire is a more stable fire than a teepee style fire. and i know that not all wood burns at the same speed, light and heat. but what if you combine the two styles. the teepee creates a candle effect. the flames will go higher than a box fire. but how about building a box fire, then adding the long teepee loggs on the side. use a slow burning wood for the sentre box. this should keep the bonfire burning longer. mix the wood on the outside. use logs and pallets, mix it up a bit. (if you don't know what a pallet is, google it). Pallets burn hot, bright and fast, logs burn slower and don't make a lot of light. use your big logs as props that will hold the structure of the fire together, you can even wet them if you want. it makes adding burn wood easier. one more thing. add some acorns to the centre of the fire as they heat up they crackle, and it makes your fire sound awesome. ... i know what you are thinking. it sounds like a lot of work. but you'll be the local legend for building the mother of all bonfires.

everytime i wipe my ass a take the poopy toilet paper and save it in a Ziplock baggie. Then overtime i have collected a whole bunch of poopy filled toilet paper. Then you take some kindling and logs and surround the poopy tp. Poop is a great conductor of fire and makes fires blaze like the gates of hell. It also smells very good when burnt :-)

Okay guys! I have done some extensive research on which type of log arrangement allows for the greatest amount of oxygen intake and what not and all the differnt incendiary rates attributed to each of the log designs. Well I am here to tell you that you are all fucking gay. What fucking normal people do when they have bonfires is they gather a fuckload of wood, throw it in a massive pit, and then pore massive amount of gasoline all over the fucking wood. Then we (normal people) get unhealthy amounts of beer, and we get fucking hammered while hanging out with women. All you boy scotts and fucking nerds can go create your stupid fucking setups and calculate how long each type of log arrangement burns and after that you can sit around your scientifically prepared fires and beat your little puny cocks while you sip on some hot chocolate. Heres some advice: go fuck yourselves and then log on to www.google.com and type in the phrase "vagina" because only God knows that you have never fucking seen one. All of you are the biggest fucking cunts I have ever witnessed and i hope you all have a great time when you all gather around your little fires and sing the pokemon theme song while you get wet over the latest issue of Popular Science. Lick my giant balls you stupid fucking fags. Go fuck your box fires and shove your teepee fires up your sphincters.
